Client: Common Vines
Project Type: Ecommerce Website & Custom WooCommerce Development
Scope: Custom WordPress theme development, WooCommerce customization, educational product content systems, advanced product filtering
Platform: WordPress / WooCommerce (_underscores-based custom theme)
Launch: 2022
Project Overview
Common Vines required an ecommerce website capable of supporting a large wine inventory while also helping customers better understand and evaluate wine preferences.
Working as part of Someone Creative’s development team, the project involved rebuilding the original static website as a custom WordPress and WooCommerce implementation while preserving the client’s existing visual identity and educational approach.
A major focus of the project centered around translating the client’s “5P’s of Wine Preference” system into a flexible, maintainable content structure integrated directly into the ecommerce experience.
Project Summary
The website was rebuilt as a custom WordPress and WooCommerce theme using the existing front-end design as the foundation for development. Because the client’s inventory included a large number of wines, a significant part of the implementation focused on improving both product discovery and customer education.
To support this, a custom content system was developed around the client’s “5P’s of Wine Preference” framework Place, Producer, Process, Palette, and Pairing. Using Advanced Custom Fields and custom template development, structured product metadata could be added directly to individual wine pages while maintaining consistent presentation across the site.
This included support for educational text content, regional map graphics, visual indicators for wine characteristics such as acidity and tannin levels, and pairing references designed to help customers better understand the wines being offered.
The same content structure was also extended into a dedicated educational section of the website, where tab-based layouts and custom graphics were used to explain the “5P’s” system in greater detail.
Because of the size of the product catalog, additional filtering functionality was integrated to improve navigation and help customers more easily locate wines based on their preferences.
The overall goal was to create an ecommerce experience that balanced product management, education, and usability within a highly customized WooCommerce environment.
Project Role
Working as part of Someone Creative’s development team, I rebuilt the original static website as a custom WordPress and WooCommerce theme while preserving the existing front-end design and educational structure developed by the client team.
My role included custom theme development, WooCommerce customization, Advanced Custom Fields implementation, custom template development, and integration of advanced product filtering functionality.
A major part of the project focused on translating the client’s educational “5P’s” system into a flexible and maintainable content structure that could be managed directly within WordPress and reused throughout the ecommerce experience.
